Samsung Galaxy Note 21 not launching in 2021?

Hey pinchers! Technology News time!!!

So the news we've been waiting for is finally here. Over the last few months, various reports had surfaced regarding Samsung discontinuing its Galaxy Note series of flagship smartphones. But turns out, that is not the case. DJ Koh, the CEO of Samsung and former head of Samsung mobile has revealed in Samsung's Annual shareholder's meeting that they will continue to launch more Galaxy Note phones in the future. However, there's a catch. The catch is they are not launching the Galaxy Note 21 this year.

There are a couple of reason for that and I'll explain it in a minute but here's what exactly DJ Koh said, “Galaxy Note is an important product category to us that has been continuously loved by consumers for the past 10 years in the global market. The S Pen user experience is an area that Samsung’s mobile business has worked harder on than anybody else. Their launch timing may be different, but we will make sure that we don’t let Galaxy Note consumers down.” DJ Koh also said that launch timelines for next year’s Galaxy Note might differ from previous launches. I quote, Note series is positioned as a high-end model in our business portfolio, It could be a burden to unveil two flagship models in a year so it might be difficult to release Note model in the second half of the year.

The timing of Note model launch can be changed but we seek to release a Note model next year.” So basically he's saying that the Galaxy Note series has not been discontinued, but only delayed for now, and expects the new flagship to be ready by next year. He also mentioned that the launch timeline of the next Galaxy Note will also change. Traditionally Samsung launches the Galaxy Note in the second half of the year in around August. But that is going to change starting next year. It's going to be interesting to see what month are they going to choose. The Galaxy S launches in January while the foldables are scheduled for July. So the Galaxy Note has definitely has found itself in a weird spot here because they don't want to keep the launch event of these high-profile devices close to each other as it has the potential to cannibalize the sales of one another.

Anyway, here are the reasons DJ Koh gave why they are not launching the Galaxy Note 21 this year. First, he said developing and offering two high-end devices in a year can be a “burden” as the line between the Galaxy S and Note models has definitely blurred. The second reason is the imbalance between the demand and supply of semiconductor chips globally. You see Samsung and TSMC are the only two major companies that have the capability to manufacture semiconductor chips and now with the pandemic, demand for cell phones, laptops, and other devices has increased considerably and these companies aren't able to keep up with the demand.

Plus recently, there was a power outage at Samsung’s chip plant in Austin, Texas, and Samsung said its foundry in Austin had not restarted production yet. As a result, there's a shortage in the global supply of semiconductor chips and Due to this shortage, Samsung has decided to skip the launch of Galaxy Note 21 this year. But thankfully we can expect new Galaxy Note devices sometime next year, the Note is not discontinued but only delayed for now. Let me know what do you think about this down in the comments and as always keep pinching.
